Trying to install Linux, 1st documented case

I have gone into record saying that I have troubles getting Linux working for me. I have tried Ubuntu (twice), Mandrake and MEPIS, over the course of four years.

Well, I tried Ubuntu (7.10, x64) again. The files loaded from the LiveCD splendidly, but this is how the desktop looked;

[Sorry for the messy table.]

Well, that's "installing linux"for few months. Say what you want about Windows, but at least you can get the desktop to show up after given time.

  1. Are you using any rare pieces of hardware?

  2. Many people usually don't appreciate how hard making software work on a big scale can be difficult. What's amazing is that many programmers don't, either. While I have lots of respect for the FOSS community, examples such as these show that statements such as "MS is crap" are childish and misinformed.

    Although you could get some help with this problem on the Ubuntu forums :-)

  3. Like Steve Jobs once said (freely rephrased); the biggest problem with Windows is that it's so unimaginable.

    The Windows Classic-theme is really growing old, but the alternatives look terribly candy and bright. We need a simple, tasteful theme, something like in OS X or even in Ubuntu. Customization by the end-user with too much time on his hands would also be nice.

    On another front, what I really wish is the ability custom Windows Explorer to show your own favourite folders.. I have really been missing that, particularly after noticing that my mp3-folders sport an advertisement link to Microsoft Music Store.

    Well, those are my biggest problems with Windows, if we forget the part where Windows Vista Ultimate costs more than the hardware for computer (500 euros!) and the operating system seems to play dumb on me on purpose.

    But really, I have been using Windows for 12 years, and during this time the operating system has hardly changed. Meanwhile Linux and Macintosh OS have improved by leaps and jumps. There could be a man playing ping pong with my balls, and after 12 years I wouldn't even notice. I mean, on some level I *know* that that's what Windows is doing with me - using my privates as punching bag - but after so many years, I just can't tell anymore.
