Linux, here I come!

One of the biggest reasons why my laptop isn't running linux is that I use it to make video calls. Linux has notoriously bad trackrecord for video (or audio)-conversations. Even commercial applications with Linux-ports usually lack video-support.

Well, no longer.

Thank you Skype!

  2. Congrats! have you actually made the switch yet?
Anyway, allow me to welcome you to Linuxland, I've been here a while, don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it ;)

  3. To be honest, I have tried linux few times over the years. My longest try lasted over a month (it was Mepis around late 2003), and I have since tried Ubuntu and Mandrake few times.

These tries have been somewhat short; I didn't succeed in installing Mandrake at all and Ubuntu caused a BSoD when I tried to adjust the resolution to the laptop's native (1024x800->1280x800).

Not being able to use the video was mostly the reason that broke the camels back.

While Ubuntu seems cool and all, my short tries leave me thinking that Ubuntu is yet not in the "it just works" area (as mac-people like to say). I know that the more techie-people dislike the "windowsing" of the operating system, but there should be able to do everything within GUI and not reach for the console (or #linuxhelp) when problem arises.

  4. Well, I understand your concern about video resolution, this had been a long time Ubuntu weakness but:
    1. I hear other disros do this better, have you tried PcLinxOS/Mephis/Suse?
    2. The latest Ubuntu release (7.10) placed an emphasis on ease of video config, it may just work for you now
    3. This is a 1st-use problem that in my view can be fixed rather easily with a text editor (no console needed, though it makes life simpler in this case I think) and then you'll never see it again, and the rest will "just-work" is it worth delaying because of such a small problem?
